A former driver of a Director of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) and another person have been remanded into police custody by the Tema District Court over the killing of Mrs. Josephine Asante. She was the Marketing Manager and Public Relations Officer at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority until her untimely death.
The accused persons are Richard Kwabena Kwakye, also known as Kwabena Boateng, and Dominic Owusu. They have been charged on two counts of conspiracy to commit murder and murder.
Accused Richard Kwabena Kwakye was a driver of the Ports Authority whilst Dominic Owusu is also a taxi driver. Kwabena Boateng and Owusu have been friends for about eleven years.
In the course of their friendship, the police prosecution told the court that Kwabena introduced Owusu to his boss and they hatched a plan to kill the deceased.
On January 12, 2019, there was an end of year party at GPHA Headquarters, which Kwabena attended with his boss. The court heard that at about 9.00pm Kwabena Boateng left the party with his boss and came to Emefs Estate to visit a friend.
Whilst at the estate, Dominic came to speak to his boss briefly and left. At about 12.30am the deceased, who also lived at Emefs Estate returned from the same party to her house.
The court was further told that Kwabena Boateng and Dominic Owusu, who had laid in wait in the vicinity, followed the deceased’s vehicle into the house, entered the apartment, stabbed and strangled her to death. After the act, they locked her up in the room, took the remote control to the main gate and fled, leaving the key on the lawn outside the gate.
On January 13, 2019, she was found dead in a pool of blood in her room.
Kwabena Boateng and Dominic Owusu fled to Burkina Faso and returned to Ghana a month later and went into hiding. On March 31, 2023, and April 13, 2023, Boateng and Owusu were respectively arrested from their hideouts.
When interrogated, Kwabena mentioned Owusu as his accomplice, but Owusu denied knowing anything about the murder of the deceased.
