The wedding of two South Sudanese youths, Buomkuoth Wiyual and Nyabuay Thiol Biel, has elicited mixed reactions.
Wiyual, 16, and his 15-year-old companion Biel tied the knot in Gambella, Ethiopia, on December 18, 2021.
Both parents and religious officials are said to have graced and blessed the occasion.
According to local media, South Sudan’s legal marriage age is 18.
The young couple’s wedding images have gone viral on Facebook, with many criticizing the planned marriage.
One John Ndungu blamed the parents and religious leaders who supported the marriage. He wrote;
“Where will the teenagers begin their lives?” I’m confident no education was achieved. How will they provide for themselves in terms of basic needs? I pity the girl #NyabuayThiolBiel, she will be made a mother at a very young age since she has no work, no money, and her education has been cut short. No motherhood experience, and so on.
“The organizing committee also failed them; look at the pant Buomkuoth is wearing; it’s short, too short for his wedding day, surely?” And the bride only bleached her face, ignoring the rest of her body.”
