Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, was born on May 6, 1950. At the time of his birth, he was known as Barima Kwaku Duah, after his paternal grandfather, Ohenenana Kwaku Duah (Nana Agari), Brahyiahene, who came from Kantinkyiren in the Ashanti Region’s Atwima District.
Otumfuo is the third son and fifth child of Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, Asantehemaa, who was blessed with three sons and two daughters by Almighty God.
Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, his immediate predecessor and “senior brother,” died on February 25, 1999. Otumfuo Opoku Ware II was succeeded by Barima Kwaku Duah.
His appointment as the next Asantehene was solidified by the immense support and widespread recognition he got from the kingdom’s chiefs and people.
On April 26, 1999, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was enstooled as the 16th occupant of the Golden Throne.
